27" SIZE 12 JUMEAU 1907

By far & away the most breathtaking 1907 I have ever had the pleasure to own!  Everything about her, from her outstanding face to her charming antique costume, lends her an undeniably idealistic, childish beauty.  Her bisque quality could not be more perfect---smooth as silk with exceptional, detailed modelling; colouring soft & gentle, decoration careful & lavishly-applied; a tender face with huge, blue paperweight eyes that are full of depth & wonderfully expressive.  Beautifully modelled, slightly-open mouth with upper teeth, pcd. ears with orig. turquoise earrings, & beautiful honey-blonde human hair wig that enhances her colouring.  Orig. Jumeau chunky jtd. comp. body in fine condition in the orig. patina with some old repaint to lower legs; both head & body are fully-signed.  Costumed in three layers of antq. undergarments, lacy stockings, old cream serge shoes with embroidery, topped by a wonderful, buttery yellow wool dress with high waist, full, puffed sleeves, embroidered cream lace insert at the bodice with pale yellow insertion lace trim at collar, waist, & cuffs.  Her sweet, antique cream bonnet is a confection of frothy, ruffled lace tiers that drape around her head & frame her face, covered profusely with embroidered daisies which match her dress, & further adorned with antique millinery florals. Completing her ensemble is a gold Victorian bar pin, handpainted with pale blue morning glories. I cannot praise this particular example enough; she has a timeless, enchanting presence and is sure to be a cherished acquisition. You may click on the picture to view different images of the doll. Price $4395.

25" KESTNER CLOSED-MOUTH POUTY 169, ALL-ORIGINAL*

Breathtaking example of the highest quality with her lustrous, pale bisque, exceptional facial modelling which emphasizes her full, childlike cheeks & pouty, closed mouth.  Lavish decoration of lashes & brows enhance huge chocolate brown sleep eyes; she retains her orig. plaster pate (never removed) & her long, chestnut human hair wig with bangs.  Orig. pencilled markings with relevant notations  to her size & identification can be found scrawled on her pate beneath her wig.  Orig. early-style chunky, jointed comp. body in the orig. patina in exc. cond. (very minor touch-up at a couple of ball-joints & some paint flaking at knee joint). *Pantaloons, petticoat, & ribbed stockings are the only things not orig. to her, although still antique.  Costume comprises her outstanding ORIG. deep royal- blue silk & wool pleated skirt with brown, polished cotton waistband & handsewn cross-stitching detail, white cotton blouse with heavily-pleated bodice & long, full, sleeves, topped by a matching royal-blue silk capelet with cream silk handsewn featherstitching.  Her original cream silk, padded bonnet adorned with a lavish cluster of folded lace & ruched lace along the edges, frames her face beautifully. Orig. cream leather shoes with silver buckles.  A gorgeous example of pure artistry, beautiful from head to toe! 24" EARLY SIMON & HALBIG 1009 FOR FRENCH MARKET

Very alluring doll made for the French market & certainly her beauty, quality, & French costume combine to make her an exceptional example of this always desirable mold.  Purest smooth, pale bisque with choice modelling & careful decoration of flat, feathered brows, lavishly-ptd. lashes over cornflower blue sleep eyes, barely-open mouth with teeth.  Her antq. wig is amazing---long, lush, & a beautiful red shade which accentuates her pale bisque & enlivens her blue eyes.  Orig. jointed comp. French-style body in fine cond. with only some minor touch-up to hands & one leg.  Dressed in an antique one-pc. undergarment that combines a full chemise with pantaloons, black cotton stockings, brown leather antq. boots with rosettes, topped by a frothy, cream, heavy lace dress made in the French style from antique lace.  3/4-length sleeves, lacy collar, & pink silk rosettes attached to the shoulders of the dress.  Completing her look is her antique cream silk serge bonnet with ruched details & a cream, patterened silk bow ornamenting the top.  One of the lovliest S&H 1009s I've had the chance to offer.  You won't be disappointed if you decide to add her to your collection! 17" EARLY FRENCH OR GERMAN PAPIER MACHE NUN

Very rare to discover a great papier mache doll with so much significance & presence as well as being so evocative of authentic religious dress, displaying the high regard for the vocation of nuns in the European era of early-to-mid 19th-century cloistered life. For many centuries, nuns' habits remained unaltered in style for years with only minor adaptations being permitted to evolve, so the manner in which this papier mache nun who was lovingly dressed by her fellow sisters, with her lovingly-preserved authentic habit & costume in keeping with the ecclesiastical rules is a fine example indeed.  Many of these originally-costumed Nun dolls were lovingly-dressed with precision & care to make a representative nun doll dressed to portray the habit as worn by the nuns in their particular religious order.  The quality of this doll is very high and spares no monetary shortcut which would have resulted in a less-perfect model of piety inside the convent walls.  Often these dolls were lovingly dressed & cared-for by the nuns of the convent. This large example may be German or French; she is of very high quality & in very fine condition with her painted features beautifully-preserved with unfaded colours & a fine patina that has only bettered with age.  One of the questions as to whether or not the nun is of French or German origin might be the evidence that the hair of the nun is painted on in black paint, in short, soft waves, which was a French innovation in their papier mache dolls.  She has softly-blushed cheeks, shaded & accented aquamaraine kindly eyes, gently-smiling mouth, & her black, wispy wavy hair painted this way to imitate the way the nuns long hair was shorn before taking their vows.  She is on her orig., very clean, hard-stuffed muslin body with mitten-stylehands, individually-stitched to indicate fingers.  She is missing her antq. undergarments but I may have some that can fit under her habit.  She seems to be dressed like Mother Teresa of Avila--as a nun from that cloistered order.  Several layers of heavy wool make up her underdress, topped by the long white gown with wide, folded sleeves & long front panel which would hide the nuns' hands from view as tradition called for.  She wears a leather belt at her waist in keeping the costume true-to-design.  A long black cape fastens underneath her chin & a long, black & gold rosary is worn around her neck.  On her head she wears her wimple which is tight alongside her face, topped by a muslin head covering, all overwhich the important long white linen veil falls midway down her back.  The costume & the quality of the doll & preservation of her painted features testify to her life as a convent doll as she appears to be unplayed-with & is in pristine cond.  If you have always wanted one lovely religious nun doll for your collection, I think this could be the one.  I looked for years and years to find the right one and here she is!  Her face is a study in piety & virtuous humility; she radiates a sense of peacefulness.  A magnificent & scarce doll; she will bring joy to you every time you look upon her serene face. Costume reminds me of habit worn by the nuns headed by St. Teresa of Avila; perhaps she is meant to represent that order of nuns.  A museum-worthy acquisition in any case and a doll with great emotional appeal, all-original head-to-toe.
