1/2" RARE, EARLY CHINA BOY;
ALL-ORIGINAL
This early, 1850s-style German
china boy is out-of-this-world!
For those who covet the rare,
early chinas, he is a magnificent
example, pristine in every way &
totally original! Beautifully-modelled
with deep shoulderplate, he
presents with all the shining
attributes that mark him
as top-quality---deep sculpting
with patrician nose, black molded
& ptd. hair with stippling
(brushstrokes) at his temples over
exposed ears,
single stroke brows, choice
tinting, rosy cheeks, blue eyes
with molded upper lid & red lid
line, perfect
smiling coral rosebud lips with
center space. In pristine
condition on the factory-orig.
cloth body with slender china
spoon hands & long, shapely
fingers, he also has painted china
flat, Balmoral laced boots with
blue garters. Several orig.
layers of undergarments include a
chemise that is handstitched with
the owner's initials "M. A." in
red thread on the chest. Costume
comprises a choice, orig. ensemble
in a wonderful printed, striped
cotton featuring a short, full
skirt & matching Zouave-style
jacket which became the
ultimate in high-fashion
children's attire as a result of
the influence & popularity of
the Civil War military uniforms of
the day. His jacket is lined &
clothing meticulously
hand-stitched with a multi-pleated
fine cotton shirt underneath,
tucked into the skirt. This Zouave-style was
also adopted in women's fashion
during the war years & is one
of the most fashionable &
recognizable clothing influences
of the time; it can also be
seen worn by early-period French
Fashion dolls like those made by
Huret & Rohmer. This child
china represents his era in
probably one of the best,
preserved examples one can hope to
find for their collection. This
rare china boy will not
disappoint!

21" FRENCH MARKET
HANDWERK 99, FACTORY-ORIGINAL
A particularly delightful
Handwerck 99 in complete
factory-orig. cond. from
head-to-toe in scrumptious pink
finery. Perfect,
peaches-&-cream bisque---as
beautiful as one could hope for;
flat, feathered French-style
brows over blue almond-shaped
sleep eyes with a heavy fringe
of painted upper & lower
lashes, four upper teeth, shaded
lips, pcd. ears, thick blonde
mohair wig with orig. cardboard
pate. I discovered a very
faint 3/4" hairline on the
forehead that is nearly
undetectable, but I want to
mention that it is there. She
also has many wig pulls; wig
pulls do not devalue the doll,
but the hairline is taken into
consideration in her price
below. Mint orig. body in the
orig. patina. Antq. pantaloons
& petticoat, pink knitted socks,
& cloth shoes (fragile) topped
by a fancy pink, lined organdy
dress with tiers of ruffled lace
along the hem as well as
bountiful lace at the bodice &
sleeves, with insertion
lace threaded with pink ribbon
at the waistline, topped by a
pink ribbon flourish draped over
the bodice & decorating one
shoulder. Her face-framing
bonnet is a beautiful, wired
pink silk bonnet (some wear)
with clusters of orig. silk
rosettes in alternating cream &
pink underneath the brim,
finished off with a delicate
pale pink lace edge. A stunning
doll that will catch your eye
from across a room & so
beautifully-preserved in her
originality!

1850s SHADOWBOX WITH ENGLISH
POURED WAX VOTIVE BABY
Lovely & hard-to-find delightful
poured wax "votive" baby swaddled in
blue polished cotton ornamented with
crisp layers of white tulle. The dress
& surrounding decoration of this
"cased" doll suggest a religious
purpose---the doll appears
intended as a likeness of the baby
Jesus with a gold frilly ornamentation
on the baby's robe as well as further
adornment in form of a halo above the
head, & embellishment on the padded
pillow beneath the baby's head.
Layers of folded ribbon & lace form a
canopy above the baby & the interior
of the case is deep with folded,
patterned paper lining the
inside, with sweeps of paint, colour &
glitter forming a background for the
layers of profuse, intricately-cut &
folded paper flowers in different
pastels. Gold, cut paper & formed
tinsel flowers with beading add to the
surrounding lavish decoration. The
shadowbox retains the orig. gilt frame
with gold bullion braiding glued to
the outer corners of the original
glass front. Measuring 10" by 12" by
5" deep, the sides & reverse of the
case is covered in brown paper. A
good history of these cased wax dolls
appears in the book, "Dolls, Toys, &
Childhood" by Ruth Mathes, pp. 105-8,
& explains their variety of orig.
purposes as memorial items, decorative
items, religious figures for devotion,
festival or ceremonial purposes,
or simply as a gift to a child to
represent a special circumstance or
event. An artistic item for display,
in perfectly-preserved condition, and
a special item to add to a collection
of early waxes.

22 1/2" PARIAN BOY BY
KLING
Charming, large tinted bisque parian-type
by Kling, incised 140 10 on
shoulderplate. He makes a
striking visual impression with
his wonderfully sculpted,
animated face, featuring
deep-set, large blue eyes with
molded lids & red lid line,
single-stroke brows, perfect,
flawless bisque with
full, perfectly-tinted cheeks,
closed mouth with darker
separating line & beautifully
sculpted, thick blonde hair with
side-part, exposed ears, & thick
waves with comb marks. Original
sturdy cloth body with kid arms
& individually-stitched &
separated fingers(one hand has a
leather repair or replacement
part as one "glove" of his
uniform is black; the other dark
brown. Black sewn-on leather
boots with stitched scallop
detail & gilt buttons. Costume
comprises an antique
uniform----a
finely-made, fully-lined, thick
gray woolen soldiers' uniform
with thick, braid piping at
collar, down the front of his
frockcoat & edged in same gold
braid. Epaulettes at his
shoulders are adorned with gilt
eagle buttons as well as eagle
buttons running down the length
of his frock coat
& on decorative tabs at his
waist. On the outside seam of
his gray woolen trousers there
is a wide, matching gold band &
his uniform is suggestive of
Civil War period military cadets
or militia, perhaps representing
a young southern Rebel officers'
uniform at the start of the war
in 1861. A wonderful young man
with striking presence, serious
countenence, & fantastic
uniform; very high-quality
example & not easily found again
in such a rare, complete
package! You may click on the picture to view

Price
$1100.

poured wax doll attributed
to the fine artistry of
the Pierotti family,

realistic blue glass
eyes enhanced by the fine,
deeply-molded lids
that lend Pierotti dolls
their "thoughtful", gentle

childlike cheeks &
beautifully-formed

sturdy repair to the plate

fragile with some
fractures/repair but all
appear stable. Flaxen hair
